First to ban single use plastics, first to declare a climate emergency, first to make way to live lighter on the land. So, it is no surprise that our community is asking how we can lead on ensuring everyone gets to come along for the ride, including the renters, pensioners and the families doing it tough on a single income.

One exciting answer to this question is on the horizon:

Plug-in solar, aka (also-known-as) ‘balcony solar‘. It’s cheap, simple and can be installed by anyone. In our push for a truly local energy transition, it could be a genuine game changer for people who have been unable to join the rooftop solar boom.

What exactly is plug in solar?

Plug-in solar systems are small, usually made up of one or two solar panels, equivalent to approximately 500W. They can be hung off a balcony rail, propped against a fence or laid flat in a courtyard. In many new models these panels come bundled with a small battery to store extra power for later.

Best of all, the whole setup connects with nothing fancier than a standard power point. No electrician, no scaffolding, no wait for approval.

This is already common in Europe. Germany alone has more than half a million households running these mini power plants, and companies are racing to bring similar kits to Australia, as Renew Economy reports.

Why this matters most for low-income households

Byron Shire’s rental crisis is no secret. Many locals live in units, granny flats or homes they do not own. Across Australia, almost a third of households rent, live in apartments or are connected to shared private networks, which locks them out of traditional rooftop solar, as researchers for The Conversation explain.

Limited roof space, the cost of upgrading old switchboards and wiring, long approval times and landlords who see little benefit in paying for panels that only save their tenants money, all add up to a familiar story: the households who would often benefit most from cheap solar power are the ones least able to access it.

Plug-in solar will not solve every part of that puzzle, but it is an exciting solution for renters and low-income households to help take control of their energy use.

The upside for Northern Rivers families

There is plenty to feel good about here. Plug-in solar kits typically cost a fraction of a full rooftop system, often just a few hundred dollars, which puts real energy savings within reach of a household budget rather than requiring a loan or years of saving.

Because they simply plug into a wall socket, tenants can install one and when moving house take it with them. A plug-in solar kit can help offset daytime power use for things like the fridge, the wifi router or a fan, chipping away at power bills right when households need relief the most.

There is also a community pride factor worth mentioning. Every panel installed on a balcony is a small but visible act of climate leadership, the kind of grassroots participation that turns a region into thousands of achievable actions.

The catch

The current picture in Australia is a work in progress.

As things stand, fully grid connected plug in solar systems are not yet certified or legal to install in Australia, because our electrical standards have not caught up with this new technology.

Rental and strata rules are another hurdle. Landlords and body corporates in Australia currently have far more say over what can be attached to a balcony or wall than tenants do, unlike in Germany.

It’s also important to note that compared to a full rooftop system, the energy generated and electricity bill savings from a small plug-in system are going to be modest

The good news is that regulators are actively working through this. Government inquiries are underway and industry voices and advocacy groups like Solar Citizens are pushing hard for rule changes that would let plug in solar be safely and legally connected to the grid.

The direction of travel is clear; it is hopefully just a matter of time.

What Northern Rivers can do while we wait

In the meantime, there is plenty the wider community can do.

Locals can also make sure they are getting the most out of existing programs such as the federal Solar Sharer Offer, which delivers free midday electricity to eligible households.

And everyone can add their voice to campaigns like Solar Citizens’ push for rental and social housing solar, because the fastest way to bring safe, legal, grid connected plug in solar to renters is to keep the pressure on decision makers for a fair shot at cheaper, cleaner power.

Plug in solar will not get us all the way there on its own, but it is a bright, practical step in exactly the right direction, and the Northern Rivers is well placed to lead the way.

What is it?

At its heart, Circular Northern Rivers is a neutral connector and enabling platform for regional action. It’s not a council initiative, not a standalone research project, and not another service provider competing for space in an already crowded landscape.

Instead, it exists to do the thing our region has struggled to do well: coordinate.

The platform is built to:

Support pilot projects and innovation on the ground

Attract investment into genuinely regional solutions

Link research directly to real-world application

It’s a simple but powerful idea. The Northern Rivers already has enormous strengths. We have engaged producers, active councils, First Nations knowledge, a strong research base, and a community that cares deeply about place. What’s been missing isn’t our capability, it’s the lack of coordination at scale.

Circular Northern Rivers is the piece designed to fill that gap.

Why it matters right now

The case for a circular economy in our region isn’t theoretical; it’s sitting in plain sight.

There is a significant, untapped economic opportunity in keeping materials, energy and value circulating locally instead of leaking out of the region.

We do have a fragmented and early-stage circular economy with pockets of great practice but no shared infrastructure to scale it up.

With mounting pressure on businesses and communities to adapt to a changing climate and economy the region is well placed to attract investment if it can show up with a coordinated offer for a strong alignment with national policy and funding directions.

Put simply: the pieces are already here.

Circular Northern Rivers is the mechanism to connect them, and to build the regional resilience, community strength and economic opportunity that come with getting this right.

Why we’re excited

For an organisation like Zero Emissions Byron, this is the kind of regional infrastructure that turns good intentions into real outcomes. Circular economy thinking only delivers at scale when there’s a trusted platform bringing the right people together, and that’s precisely the gap Circular Northern Rivers is stepping into.

It’s early days, but Phase 1 is deliberately built to listen first, design with the community, and prove value through visible, real-world pilots rather than announcements alone.

We’ll be watching this closely, and we’d encourage our community to get involved.

Once you’re energy literate, you can start making choices that actually save you money. Take the time and make it work for you with these six how-to tips:

1. How to save money

When you know how charges are calculated (usage rates, fixed fees, taxes, time-of-use pricing), you can spot ways to cut costs, like shifting usage to off-peak hours.

2. How to catch errors

Bills sometimes contain mistakes, like incorrect meter readings or duplicate charges. Knowing what to look for helps you catch and dispute them.

3. How to track consumption patterns

Looking at your usage over time helps you notice spikes (e.g., from an aging appliance or AC unit) and you can fix the problems early.

4. How to budget for the better

Understanding fixed vs. variable charges helps you predict future costs and plan your monthly budget more accurately.

5. How to Mmake informed decisions

If you’re considering solar panels, a new provider, or energy-efficient upgrades, understanding your current bill gives you a baseline to compare savings against.

6. How to avoid service issues

Knowing due dates, payment terms, and late fees helps you avoid disconnection or penalty charges.

But only if it’s set up the right way.

Essential Energy is trialling “Plug and Play” kerbside chargers here in the Northern Rivers. The idea: the network operator builds and maintains the charger, and any electricity retailer can sell power through it. No lock-in to one app or one operator.

That’s a good starting point. Here’s the double win on offer, and the fine print we’ve asked the regulator to sort out first.

Win one: cheaper power for everyone, eventually

More EVs on the road means the electricity network gets used more efficiently. Essential Energy says that could bring network charges down for all of us over time — not just EV owners.

It’s a fair idea in theory. In our submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission, we’ve asked for one thing: proof. A clear number on what this adds to a typical bill now, and a clear path showing how and when savings actually flow back. “Trust us, it’ll pay off” isn’t good enough when the cost lands on every bill from day one.

Win two: your car could power your home

EVs aren’t just transport. Down the track, they can feed power back into the grid — vehicle-to-grid, or V2G. Think of your car as a battery on wheels, helping smooth out demand at peak times and, potentially, cutting your own power costs.

That’s a genuine upside for the whole network, not just EV owners. We’ve asked Essential Energy to spell out how kerbside charging connects to this bigger picture — and what grid upgrades are needed to make it real, given a single EV can double a household’s electricity use.

The fine print that makes or breaks it

For this to be a fair deal for everyone — not just an early win for EV owners paid for by everyone else — three things need to happen:

Show the price, upfront. Just like a fuel bowser shows price per litre before you commit, every charger should show a clear price per kWh for every retailer. No hidden fees, no app required to compare.

Phase the cost fairly. Today’s small base of EV owners — and non-EV owners — shouldn’t carry the full cost upfront. The bill should grow in step with EV uptake, not ahead of it.

Build in an off-ramp. If EV charging becomes genuinely profitable, private investment should be able to take over — DNSP involvement doesn’t need to be locked in forever.

Where this lands

We support the goal here — accessible, affordable EV charging in regional communities is worth backing. Our job, as your local voice in this process, is making sure the way it’s paid for is fair, transparent, and genuinely earns the “free power and cheap upgrades” it promises — rather than assuming it.

The rule replaces the old annual planning report with a new long-term plan, published every five years with short annual updates in between.
How it started

In early 2025, ZEB Chair Anne Stuart and Jill Moonie of the Brunswick Residents Association (now a ZEB Board member) lobbied Byron Shire Council to embrace renewable energy on its community buildings and invest in battery storage. Their case was simple: given the Shire’s recent history of bushfires, floods and extended power outages, community resilience matters — and batteries paired with solar could help deliver it. By September 2025, Council had agreed to investigate whether solar and batteries could be installed on community facilities to provide power in an emergency. A Community Battery Working Group formed soon after, spending five months exploring possible operating models. The idea was twofold: a replicable model that puts batteries on Council-owned facilities with existing or potential solar — feeding energy back to the grid at night for a financial return — while also providing backup power when the grid goes down.

With the Working Group’s support, Council engaged renewable energy consultants Beam Consulting to assess which facilities could best support battery storage, what the community benefits would be, and what it would cost.

First site: Mullumbimby Civic Centre

The first system proposed is a 10kW solar PV + 24kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for Mullumbimby Civic Centre. Beam Consulting’s assessment involved:

Desktop analysis — checking network supply capacity and connection limits, gathering electricity interval data, and reviewing energy tariffs.

Site inspection — assessing the switchboard’s location, condition and spare capacity, checking available space and compliance for battery and rooftop solar, and identifying locations for solar panels, the battery, converters, load-shedding control circuits and cable routes.

Design output — preliminary system layouts and design drawings.

Three ways to run it

The consultants modelled three operating scenarios for the site:

Load Following + Backup (0% reserved) — maximises grid offset and financial savings, but leaves no guaranteed battery reserve for outages.

Backup Power Resilience (100% reserved) — maximises outage protection, but forgoes day-to-day financial and emissions benefits.

Optimised (50% reserved) — a blend of both, balancing daily savings with guaranteed backup capacity.

Putting it to the test

To understand how the system would perform in a real emergency, outage simulations were run under two conditions:

Typical sunshine: an average simulated outage delivered roughly 53 hours of backup power.

Storm conditions (7% solar irradiance): an average simulated outage delivered roughly 22 hours, with the shortest simulated outage providing around 4 hours using only 20% load shedding — an area the assessment flagged as improvable with more aggressive load shedding.

These figures assume 80% of the site’s load is essential, managed through clear manual load-shedding procedures for staff during an outage.

Why Mullumbimby Civic Centre

The site is a well-established community hub for disaster response, already has air-conditioning (valuable for heat resilience), and has some consumption data available through its existing solar monitoring — making it a strong candidate to lead the way.

Funding update

An Expression of Interest was submitted under the NSW Community Building Partnership 2026 grant program specifically for Mullumbimby Civic Hall. The project was shortlisted, and a detailed application went to the NSW Community Building Partnership on 17 July 2026. This
state grant program supports local infrastructure projects that strengthen the wellbeing of NSW communities.

The funding outcome will be announced on 22 January 2027.

Households now have access to two new programs that lower power bills and, just as importantly, help cut the emissions that come from the way we generate and use electricity. Both programs work by shifting how and when we use energy, and by making it cheaper to swap old, inefficient equipment for clean, efficient alternatives. Here is what they are, how they help reduce emissions, and how to get started.

Free electricity in the middle of the day

From 1 July 2026, eligible households can access free electricity every day between 11am and 2pm through the Solar Sharer Offer. You don’t need rooftop solar to take part, and renters are eligible too. Households can use up to 24 kilowatt hours of free power during the three-hour window.

This matters for emissions because the middle of the day is when rooftop and grid scale solar output is at its highest across New South Wales. At these times, there is often more solar power available than the grid can use, so some of it goes to waste or is exported at very low or even negative prices.

By encouraging households to shift energy hungry tasks, such as running the washing machine, dishwasher, air conditioner, pool pump, water heater or EV charger, into this window, the offer helps make full use of clean solar generation that would otherwise be curtailed. Less reliance on fossil fuel generation during the evening peak, when coal and gas plants typically ramp up to meet demand, means fewer emissions overall.

To join, contact your electricity retailer to opt in. You will also need a smart meter, which your retailer can arrange to install if you do not already have one. Because electricity costs a little more outside the free period, the real savings, and the real emissions benefit, come from shifting as much use as possible into the free window rather than simply using power as usual.

Cheaper upgrades through the Home Energy Saver program

The second initiative tackles emissions from a different angle: helping households replace old, energy hungry equipment with efficient, all electric alternatives. From 17 June 2026, the NSW Government's Home Energy Saver program offers zero interest loans of up to $15,000, repayable over as long as ten years, to eligible households with a combined taxable income of up to $210,000.

The loans can help cover the cost of rooftop solar, home batteries, insulation, reverse cycle air conditioning, switchboard upgrades, ceiling fans and draught proofing. Later in 2026, eligible concession card holders and households earning up to $80,000 will also be able to access discounts of up to $4,000, which do not need to be repaid. Renters can access the discounts too, with their landlord's permission.

Each of these upgrades reduces emissions in its own way.

Rooftop solar and batteries let households generate and store clean energy rather than drawing on the grid at peak times. Insulation and draught proofing cut the amount of energy needed to heat and cool a home in the first place. Reverse cycle air conditioning is far more efficient than old gas heaters or resistive electric heaters, and switchboard upgrades make it possible for a home to safely electrify other appliances down the track. Together, these upgrades reduce a household's overall energy demand and shift what remains toward cleaner sources.

Why the combination matters

On their own, each program helps reduce emissions. Together, they reinforce one another.

The Solar Sharer Offer rewards households for using more electricity when the grid is cleanest, while the Home Energy Saver program makes it more affordable to install the solar panels, batteries and efficient appliances that let households take full advantage of that clean, low-cost power. The result is lower bills for households and faster progress toward a renewable energy future.

To find out if you are eligible, talk to your electricity retailer about the Solar Sharer Offer, and visit the Home Energy Saver program page to check eligibility and apply.

 >
To B Corp or not to B Corp? That might not be the real question

Never one to miss an opportunity to meet over coffee, I eagerly accepted an invitation to celebrate B Corp Month in March. Eagerly. Then I realised I should do a little homework first — slightly less eagerly.

First things first: the “B” in B Corp stands for “benefit for all.” The idea is that businesses balance purpose and profit, considering the impacts of their decisions on workers, customers, communities and the environment. To achieve certification, companies go through a rigorous process overseen by the global non-profit B Lab. Businesses must assess and publicly report on how they operate — from governance and worker wellbeing to environmental practices and community impact. It is not a once-off exercise either. To keep the certification, companies must repeat the process every three years.

It was a bit of an eye-opener to see this level of scrutiny applied voluntarily by private companies. Several businesses in the Byron Shire have already taken the step. Cape Byron Distillery, best known for Brookie’s Gin, became a certified B Corp in 2022. Stone & Wood Brewing was one of the early Australian breweries to gain certification. Sienna Byron Bay, a sustainable nail-polish brand, has been certified since 2019. Summerland Bank is another well-known regional example.

At first glance, it might seem like there are only a handful of B Corps locally. But in fact, towns such as Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Ballina have one of the highest concentrations of B Corps per capita in Australia. That raises an interesting question: why here?

Part of the answer lies in the Northern Rivers’ long tradition of community enterprise, environmental awareness and locally driven initiatives. Long before “purpose-driven business” became fashionable, people here were already experimenting with new ways of balancing economic activity with environmental responsibility. In many ways, B Corp certification simply formalises something that has been happening organically in this region for decades.

But the movement has not been without criticism. Last year some commentators argued that the B Corp assessment was too vague and insufficiently regulated, and that the standards were not high enough. In response, B Lab has strengthened its framework and introduced more robust requirements. That is probably healthy. If the idea is to hold companies to higher standards, the framework itself needs to keep evolving.

Which brings us back to the question: to B Corp, or not to B Corp?
Perhaps the real question is bigger than certification.

As Australia moves through the energy transition — shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy, electrification and decentralised energy systems — regional communities will play an increasingly important role. Rooftop solar, community batteries, local microgrids and new forms of energy sharing are already reshaping how energy is produced and used.

These changes are not just technological. They are economic and social as well.

The transition creates opportunities for local ownership, new business models and community participation in the energy system. Regional economies like the Northern Rivers can become places where innovation happens — where businesses, households and community organisations work together to build resilient local systems.

In that context, the values behind B Corp; transparency, accountability, and balancing profit with wider community benefit, feel particularly relevant. Certification itself may not be the end goal. But the conversation it encourages about what businesses are for, who they serve, and how they contribute to their communities is an important one. And in a region already thinking seriously about climate action, community resilience and the future economy, that conversation is likely to keep growing. So perhaps the real question is not whether every business should become a B Corp. It is whether more businesses, certified or not — are willing to operate as if community benefit matters just as much as profit.

The Better Business Monthly Coffee Catch-up for the Northern Rivers community (northernrivers@bcorp.community) brings together B Corps and B-Curious businesses, and anyone interested in making business better for people and planet. Events are organised by the affable Willem Overbosch from SDG Align, a business that helps organisations turn sustainability into practical action.
