Kerbside EV charging is coming to regional NSW, and it could hand our community two wins at once. But only if it’s set up the right way.

Essential Energy is trialling “Plug and Play” kerbside chargers here in the Northern Rivers. The idea: the network operator builds and maintains the charger, and any electricity retailer can sell power through it. No lock-in to one app or one operator.

That’s a good starting point. Here’s the double win on offer, and the fine print we’ve asked the regulator to sort out first.

Win one: cheaper power for everyone, eventually

More EVs on the road means the electricity network gets used more efficiently. Essential Energy says that could bring network charges down for all of us over time — not just EV owners.

It’s a fair idea in theory. In our submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission, we’ve asked for one thing: proof. A clear number on what this adds to a typical bill now, and a clear path showing how and when savings actually flow back. “Trust us, it’ll pay off” isn’t good enough when the cost lands on every bill from day one.

Win two: your car could power your home

EVs aren’t just transport. Down the track, they can feed power back into the grid — vehicle-to-grid, or V2G. Think of your car as a battery on wheels, helping smooth out demand at peak times and, potentially, cutting your own power costs.

That’s a genuine upside for the whole network, not just EV owners. We’ve asked Essential Energy to spell out how kerbside charging connects to this bigger picture — and what grid upgrades are needed to make it real, given a single EV can double a household’s electricity use.

The fine print that makes or breaks it

For this to be a fair deal for everyone — not just an early win for EV owners paid for by everyone else — three things need to happen:

  • Show the price, upfront. Just like a fuel bowser shows price per litre before you commit, every charger should show a clear price per kWh for every retailer. No hidden fees, no app required to compare.
  • Phase the cost fairly. Today’s small base of EV owners — and non-EV owners — shouldn’t carry the full cost upfront. The bill should grow in step with EV uptake, not ahead of it.
  • Build in an off-ramp. If EV charging becomes genuinely profitable, private investment should be able to take over — DNSP involvement doesn’t need to be locked in forever.

Where this lands

We support the goal here — accessible, affordable EV charging in regional communities is worth backing. Our job, as your local voice in this process, is making sure the way it’s paid for is fair, transparent, and genuinely earns the “free power and cheap upgrades” it promises — rather than assuming it.

What exactly is Zero Emissions Byron, and what have we been doing, you may ask?

Zero Emissions Byron (or as well call it, ZEB) was initiated in March 2015 as a collaboration between the Byron Shire Community, the Byron Shire Council, Beyond Zero Emissions, and the Centre for Social Change.

The organisation’s initial focus was on developing its internal structure, building relationships with key stakeholders, and creating an emissions inventory for the Byron Shire region.

Over the years, ZEB has undertaken numerous initiatives to promote sustainable living and reduce emissions. These include hosting workshops and events, such as the Good Fire Live: Cultural Burning workshop and the Sustainable House Day, and launching projects like the Byron BYD Electric Vehicle Expo and the CO2 Drawdown Stories.

ZEB has also released educational resources like the Retrofitting for Energy Independence video and the Replant Byron Native Restoration Guide. We have also conducted surveys to understand public knowledge and interest in electric vehicles and has initiated tree planting projects to sequester CO2. The organisation continues to inspire community action on reducing emissions and promoting sustainable practices.

We’ve now updated our HISTORY page to reflect these achievements; please click onto this link to see what the tiny team at Zero Emissions Byron has accomplished in our efforts to accelerate Byron Shire’s transition to net zero emissions.

What’s next, you may ask?

Right now, we’re working with Bangalow Historical Society to create a demonstration Eco House in Bangalow’s Museum, known as Heritage House. Originally a failed Brunswick Heads brothel, in 1995 the old ‘Queenslander’ style wooden building was relocated to its current site in the Bangalow Parklands in order to create a local museum.

Our planned transformation of the building will showcase ‘best practice’ sustainable innovations, materials and products to educate the public and individuals in a permanent display. We’re keen to show how water and electricity overheads can be reduced, and energy independence can be improved to offset “bill shock” as energy prices increase.

Zero Emissions Byron comms team member Katrina Shields shared some images of EVs she saw on her recent Italy trip last week - but they're not something you can expect to see here any time soon.

"Just a few of the tiny electric cars for the tiny Italian streets," said Katrina on the Zero Emissions Byron Friends Facebook group.

"Overall the air quality seems good despite lots of motor bikes. Higher fuel standards has many benefits! Having smaller cars makes these cities so much more people friendly rather than car dominated."

In part, smaller cars suit many Italian towns better because of the incredibly narrow streets. But we won't see them anytime soon in Australia because Australian design rules don't allow them.

Europe is already far ahead of Australia in the transition to clean transport. And although Italy's EV market has floundered in recent months, it's good to see compact EV options.

Some of the vehicles Katrina snapped include the Citroen Ami, a pocket-sized two-seater that is essentially a quadricycle, is just 2.4m long, and has a driving range of 70km from its 5.5kWH battery.

Unlike Australia which is only just now considering introducing legislated fuel efficiency standards, Italy introduced a mandatory fuel efficiency (carbon emissions) standard back in 2009 according to the International Energy Agency.

Average CO2 emissions standards for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were set at 130 g CO₂/km and 175 g CO₂/km respectively for the period 2015-19. For the period 2020-2024, the emissions standards were set at 95 g CO₂/km for passenger cars and 147 g CO₂/km for light commercial vehicles.

In 2019, Italy also began offering 4,000-6,000 euro rebates for low and zero-emissions vehicles, and taxed big polluters (that emit more than 250g/km CO2).

That said, some of these microcars start from just 5,000 euros and are already very affordable options for European inner city dwellers!

Another EV snapped by Katrina is this little Smart EQ ForTwo city car. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz-owned Smart stopped production of the EQ ForTwo in April in preparation for the introduction of the Smart #1. With a 16.7kWh battery it offered about 100km in real world range.

Which is a shame: The Smart ForTwo was Italy's fourth most popular EV in the first quarter of 2023 according to Cleantechnica, with the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 claiming #1 and #3 position respectively.

At #2 was the Fiat 500e with 311km range - which we can expect to see in Australia in coming months! It costs a little more than a microcar however - starting from $52,500 before on-road costs.

Katrina also snapped a number of microcars and delivery vehicles that may or may not be powered by battery, but are still super-cute!

Stuart Watson, a former Essential Energy engineer and owner of a solar company business in Port Macquarie spoke about his early efforts converting a Daihatsu Charade to electric in 2007. Watson outlined how regional areas in particular can benefit from electrification, and that in fact the grid is under-utilised – meaning more EVs will equal better utilisation of the network.

“My involvement with Essential Energy really highlights the fact that Essential Energy is … going to get the most out of the increased use of the network,” he said to the audience.

“We can use the asset – that the wires that bind us together more effectively…farmers can utilise electrification to save money, to keep the money in the district so you’re not filling up your diesel ute and sending the money to Singapore, so we’re getting better energy security, it’s a really good news story.”

Watson highlighted that in terms of farming equipment, there are manufacturers overseas already selling electric tractors. He cited Solectrac, which he says is selling small electric tractors priced similarly to combustion engine tractors.

“There’s massive maintenance savings,” he also added.

Farmers concerns about EVs

One farmer expressed concerns about thermal runaway in the case of crashes in regional areas. Watson said that statistically, EVs are safer in accidents because thermal runaway is slow. However, in combustion engine vehicles, explosions are immediate and death is more likely.

Others pointed out that new battery chemistries such as BYD’s lithium-iron phosphate Blade battery is much safer and very resistant to thermal runaway when punctured.

Another farmer asked about charging speeds for EVs with large batteries. Watson cited the example of Janus, which is converting prime movers and planning a battery-swap system for long haul transport.

Another concern is around the need for numerous apps in order to use various public charging networks. Whilst the need for apps will remain for some time, there are EV fast-chargers that can “plug and play” already in operation in Europe (vehicles need to have appropriate hardware and software to be able to talk to these chargers.)

“You’re talking to someone who doesn’t like having even one app on his phone!” said the farmer.

Electric ute on show

On show was an electric ute made by LDV – the all-electric version of the T60.

However, its lacklustre specifications did not whet farmers’ interest. The eT60 is a rear-wheel drive utility truck that offers a 1-tonne payload. Solar Citizens says it can tow 1-tonne, but is not rated for towing in Australia (the government’s department of infrastructure however does list a 1-tonne towing capability on its Rover website however.)

As Solar Citizens pointed out, the lack of 4WD and low towing capacity would not be suitable for on-farm use.

Additionally, the eT60 is priced some $20,000 higher in Australia – more than $90,000 – than in New Zealand due to a lack of government incentives aimed at the sector. (While certain states have $3,000 rebates and other incentives in Australia, they have cut-off points of less than $69,000.)

Part of the issue here is that Australia remains, among developed nations, alone with Russia in not having legislated Fuel Efficiency Standards.

Whilst in other countries carmakers need to sell electric vehicles to bring down their average fleet emissions – Australia only has voluntary standards introduced by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

This means that Australian drivers and farmers have less choice of electric vehicles than in other nations – both at the affordable sub-$40,000 end of the market, and also at the upper utility vehicle end of the market.

The federal government is currently inviting submissions on what should be built into a legislated Fuel Efficiency Standard. Solar Citizen’s Clean Transport Campaign Manager Ajaya Haikerwal outlined the importance of ambitious standards, and also invited people to sign its petition.

In November 2022 Ruth & her partner took delivery of a brand new Tesla Model Y.

While delirious with some kind of lurgy in June last year, my partner had managed to order this car online – while I was away in Sydney. I came back home and said “What?!  It’s not 4WD and we live in the northern rivers where the roads are all full of potholes and half our driving is on dirt roads? And…. It costs S-E-V-E-N-T-Y  T-W-O  T-H-O-U-S-AN-D dollars!!!”

Neither of us had EVER bought a new car before. He had a $5,000 old Triton ute. I had an 8-year-old second hand Subaru. We are both in our late sixties and living on our superannuation savings. I have been totally committed to getting an EV…at some point, but the cost just freaked me out.

But.

The deposit was only $300…. so the decision got put on hold….for months.

Also my partner (of 35 years) had never spent money on “stuff”. He always had the oldest computer, the bombiest car, the few clothes he owned became very old before being thrown out. But he is a scientist and loves new technologies.  We have 11kW of solar panels on our roof.

He didn’t keep trying to convince me, but he read everything available about EVs and the order remained.

I could see this was really really important to him. So in about September, I said “I think we should get this EV’. The smile!!!

So we have been EV owners for around six months. We power our car totally from the solar energy generated on our roof. We use an app called Charge HQ to ensure every bit of spare solar energy generated during the day goes into our car via the 7kW charger we had installed. We have taken one long trip to southern NSW and had no problem charging at Tesla superchargers every two or three hours.

In just the last six months it is getting easier to see how fast the transition to EVs will be. But the price will have to come down. A lot. And it will. Let’s hope government policy and initiatives speed up this process so that EVs will be affordable for many more people.

Saul argues that for the drastic emission reductions the world needs to make within the decade, the only viable solution is to work with "technologies that we have now that you can buy off the shelf".

"We have to get 50 per cent reductions by 2030 for a climate target we want," he says. "It's 'go' time for the stuff that works."

The (pilot) plan is known as "Electrify 2515". It aims for all household machines in the postcode area running on fossil fuels — from gas cooktops to petrol cars — to be converted to electric equivalents and powered by renewable energy.

So stop waiting for policy makers and product innovators to solve the climate crisis.  Read more about Soul's plan, it's actually really simple but not cheap so working out what your household needs to change and talking to your friends, family and neighbours about the task at hand is your first step.

In early December I got the chance to "ruin", as the tongue-in-cheek vernacular goes, the better part of a week in the Model Y.

The plan was to try it out for camping “lite”, sleeping in the back except for one night stopover at a girlfriend’s in Inverell.

Because I forgot to charge to full up before leaving home, my first stop was the Evie Networks charger at Tyndale. There I talked to a couple who were trying to work out how to charge their MG ZS EV which they had owned for a week. I talked them through downloading the app and confirmed the CCS2 plug was the one to use, for which they were grateful. I charged up 42kWh in 31 minutes, then headed onto the Supercharger at Coffs Harbour before a little detour to check out Urunga then on to Bellingen.

After that I spent the night at Thora, a free campground next to the well stocked general store. The next morning, I headed up the mountain with about 76% charge to Dorrigo.

I have added screenshots of energy usage going up the mountain to Dorrigo: I actually managed to save 3.7% energy mainly due to stopping for roadworks. While I originally thought not running air con saved a lot, the widget shows very little energy is used by air con. It’s really only a consideration for very long trips where destination SoC is very low.

After that things got a little hairy. I realised that the NRMA fast charger at Armidale was out of order (it is fixed now!) so I was going to have to head overland via Guyra to Glen Innes to use the free NRMA charger there.

I was originally projected by the Tesla energy consumption widget to arrive there with 13%. Winds up on the plateau meant that at one point this dropped to 5%, so I slowed down between Ebor and Guyra to 70km/hr. From Guyra it’s more or less downhill so I could speed up a bit, but it was a great example of how useful the new Tesla energy consumption widget is. I like the visualisation that in a way gamifies it.

I got to Glen Innes with 8% state of charge. I’ve downloaded the route from ABRP (A Better Route Planner app) and adjusted some of the values to match my driving experience. The trip to Inverell from Glen was easy peasy of course and also "ruined" with the view of wind turbines. I’ll never tire of seeing that!

So after spending one night at the free camp spot at Thora, and one night in Inverell, I ended up at Dangar Falls campground in Dorrigo (not the National park near Armidale) for the third night and at Urunga caravan park for the last night.

Both are stunning spots and I highly recommend them. The owners at Dangar graciously let me plug in for no extra cost (I paid a caravan fee). I haven’t added them to Plugshare because they were a little unsure about how the charging would go and I didn’t see them again before I left.

That said - I was the first person who’s asked to plug in an EV - they said they were aware there is a change coming and expect to be asked the question about charging again.

They have 15amp outlets. It’s a no book site but I recommend making contact about charging before arriving. The first plug dialled down to 7amps after about 15 minutes, so I changed to another plug and that was ok. I was back to 100% by morning, allowing me to explore the mountain (aside from the Rainforest Cente and a walk to Tristania Falls, Griffiths Lookout is well worth a visit too.)

I was also the first person to ask at Urunga Reflections Park if they had a policy for EV charging. They didn’t, but were happy for me to plug in, and also acknowledged a change is coming. As it happened, the outlets didn’t allow enough room for my UMC plug - would take an extension cord also next time.

I didn’t really need it though as I could easily get to the Coffs Supercharger the next day. Going home was even better after a quick massage at the shopping centre there after two nights of not sleeping flat (because I have seat covers in the back, my back seats don't go down flat) 😅

It was only four nights, but that was enough to work out that if I were to do it again, I need to 1) take off the aftermarket seat covers in the back so they lie flat! And 2) invest in a decent mattress, our spare foamie in the garage doesn’t cut it for my hips 😅 I would also consider removing the bottom of the back seat next time.

My only “furniture” was a camping chair with a lift up table on the side. This was ok - as long as I could put it under the shade of a tree or in the shade of the car (there’s quite a bit with the tailgate up). I’d also probably get a mozzie net for next time, and I like the look of the fitted tent extensions around online.

My Waeco fridge fitted perfectly in the storage beneath the back cargo area. It was a little awkward getting food and drinks in and out but worked a treat. I didn’t take cooking equipment, just ate sandwiches and fruit and greatly appreciated how close Urunga Pub was for a hot dinner on the last night 😍

There was also plenty of storage in the car to pack things like my fold up chair and clothes bag on the front seats at night when locking up. I bought a long rectangular mop bucket for kitchen items and washing up which fit in front of one of the back seats. The frunk had the cables and other sundries.

Head along to the TAFE campus at  Wollongbar, 61 Sneaths Road this Saturday for a day filled with all things Green Living.  Our star Board Member, Sebastian Crangle, will be on the 1.30pm panel discussing "Creating a Green Home" alongside Phil Dudman (ABC Garden Gugu).

The Northern Rivers Green Living Expo is a family-friendly community event that is designed to engage, inform, and entertain everyone that attends.

Everyone is being invited to come along on Saturday 10th December to TAFE NSW Wollongbar between 9 am and 4 pm and enjoy a green living gathering in a beautiful space with views of rolling hills and the Nightcap Range.

On show will be demonstrations, a Green Living Q&A panel session, and an excitingly diverse range of local products, programs, and services as well as local musicians, local food, coffee, and a full program of activities for children to maintain a buzz throughout the day.Bring your family and friends to share in the spirit of our community that cares for the environment and is working towards creating a bright future for future generations.

All funds raised by the Rotary Club of Alstonville are directed toward community service and youth support programs.
